Instructor: Dr. Mihaela PAUN Phone: 257-4505

E-mail: mpaun@latech.edu

Office: GTM 368 Office hours: TR 10-12 pm or MW 1-3pm.

Course prerequisite: Math 242 (single variable differential and integral calculus)

Note: Credit will not be given for Stat 505 if graduate credit has been given for Stat 405/

Textbook: Probability and Statistics for Engineers, by R.L. Scheaffer and J.T. McClave

Course Goals: The student will learn to use discrete and continuous random variables and probability distributions, reliability and quality control, analysis of variance and regression, categorical data, and make use of computers in data analysis.

Graphing calculator and computers: A graphing calculator that does at least as much as the TI-82 will be needed for assignments. Its use on exams will be at the discretion of the instructor. The student needs to have access to Excel.

Attendance regulations: Class attendance is regarded as an obligation as well as a privilege. All students are expected to attend regularly and punctually. Failure to do so may jeopardize a student's scholastic standing and may lead to suspension from the university.

Homework policy: Assignments will be assigned but will not be collected and graded. In addition, two projects (individual work) will be assigned, each of them being worth 25points.

Examinations: There will be three tests, each of equal weight, 100 points each. All students will hand in their tests before leaving the room for any reason. A student who is forced to miss an exam must notify the instructor no later than the day of the exam, or a grade of zero will be recorded. Sleeping in is NOT an excuse, nor are unspecified 'family problems'. There will be NO makeup tests scheduled.

Grade determination procedure: The percentages with which the examinations and homework will be weighted are indicated above. The grading scale will have the usual ten point cut-offs, i.e., A: 90% -100%; B: 80% - 89%; C: 70% - 79%; D: 60% - 69%; F: below 60%. In the event of a question regarding a test grade or the final grade, it will be the responsibility of the student to retain and present graded materials which have been returned for student possession during the quarter.

Honor policy: In accordance with the Academic Honor Policy, students are expected to pledge the following: "Being a student of higher standards, I pledge to embody the principles of academic integrity." Details of the code are on the web site http://www.latech.edu/tech/students/honor-code.pdf. A student who is caught cheating may receive an F on the course.

Students needing special accommodations: Students needing testing or classroom accommodations based on a disability should discuss the need with the instructor during the first week of classes.
